EAT: La Fromagerie, Marylebone

La Fromagerie is the kind of middle-class wet dream that I am far too in love with to pretend I’m too cool for. Famed for its onsite cheese maturing cellars and chilled walk-in cheese rooms, its rustic interior is also packed to the rafters with fruit and veg, organic wine, delicious puddings and kitchen cupboard essentials. On busy days people queue for the chilled cheese room (only a few at a time in this carefully controlled environment), but I can see why. Row after row and shelf after shelf of cheese is laid out, a veritable feast for the eyes – grab one of the helpful guys serving and tell them the kinds of cheese you like or are looking for – they’ll let you try heaps of them until you hit on the one you want, and are effortlessly patient and well-informed. When you’ve made your selection, get it packaged up and head to the back of the store to their mini deli/café counter. Grab a seat on the long, grizzled wood benches and grab a fresh salad or a big slice of quiche. Dig in. Perfect shopping morning, followed by a delicious lunch.

(And if you need meat you can always head next door to The Ginger Pig. Super handy.)
